For all 16 episodes I was waiting for an explanation of how and why he chose who to kill, and the best plausible explanation given was he “owns” the lives of the dead in the form of books.

The chemistry between our OTP is however, not enough to dispel my my unhappiness that Chef Kwon’s motives for murder remains…random. Their couple scenes, be it just being sweet with each other, or cracking their heads together to understand hints, displayed strong chemistry.

Yoo Chun and Shin Se Kyung are definitely one of the cutest couple in K-Dramaland, no doubt about that. Nonetheless, Show is a rather easy watch, as long as you’re not recapping it, because I think most of us will just sweep the loopholes and facepalmy writing under the rug.Īs I was telling sab, the OTP is probably the best thing about Show (hey, there’re rumors out there saying Yoo Chun ad-libbed many of the kisses!). I read that alot of people have alot to say about the writing of Show, and I do agree that it’s nothing outstanding, and in fact, there’s alot of lazy writing and loopholes. I actually find myself getting mildly excited whenever Cho-rim sees a scent, juz to see how the smell is represented. Chef Kwon is all sharp, spiky yellowy-golden knives, representing his role as a murderer and chef (both kill things), and danger (yellow). Cho-rim, on the other hand, can be rather impulsive and emotional she heavily relies on Moo-gak’s clearheadedness and stability in times of crisis. If she doesn’t have Moo-gak as background support when she enters the lion’s liar, she may have died of fright.Īnother thing which I like about Girl is the CGI effects - aren’t the smells pretty? And they are symbolic too - Moo-gak is all blue, hard crystals, symbolising his inability to feel properly, his logical thinking and also his previous marine diver job. Cho-rim compensates for Moo-gak’s inability to emote, by having an extra-sensory ability. It’s a big bonus that they complement each other’s lack too. And unlike other rom-coms, the pair don’t beat around the bush that long to admit their feelings for each other. And what makes me watch Girl isn’t its patchy storyline of a twisted psychopath, but our OTP.Ĭho-rim and Moo-gak have already fallen in love at first sight from the moment they crash-bang and meet on that busy street. Cos Girl is all about senses isn’t it, one has an “extra” sense of “smell”/ sight, the other has a lack. I much prefer the other title - Sensory Couple. In that line of thought, having the title focusing only on Cho-rim is also a misnomer. He’s juz a rather nicely developed plot device to bring our OTP together. Whether or not we get answers to why Chef Kwon kills people, and how he goes about killing them, are irrelevant. Juz happen that the catalyst is a psychopath.

THE GIRL WHO SEES SMELLS REVIEW SERIAL

Yes, I agree that his Barcode Murders remain one of the more memorable serial murders I’ve seen in kdramaland, but Girl isn’t really about him.Ĭhef Kwon’s Barcode Murder is juz a pretext for Cho-rim and Moo-gak’s fates to intertwine. And while there are many viewers who are baying for blood on the not-so-tidy conclusion to Chef Kwon, I personally don’t feel that upset about it. (in fact, she watches Girl faster than me, even though i’ve been the one reviewing the show) And even more surprisingly, kooriyuki volunteers to work with me on the final review (remember she has backlogs?) This is one show which kooriyuki surprisingly doesn’t put on the backburner to become her ever-increasing backlog.
